About Lord Jim By Joseph Conrad
Lord Jim is a novel by Joseph Conrad originally published as a serial in Blackwood's Magazine from October 1899 to November 1900. An early and primary event is the abandonment of a ship in distress by its crew including the young British seaman Jim. He is publicly censured for this action and the novel follows his later attempts at coming to terms with his past. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Lord Jim 85th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.

Joseph Conrad is an amazing writer, given his Polish background. His sentences and paragraphs are long, though, and, at times, it was hard for me to figure out the subject of his descriptions without going back to the beginning for the section. There is not much physical action but plenty of psychological. I'm not sure, however, that I understood Jim all that well except to think he was naive or immature, especially in his understanding of himself. He was very hard on himself, in fact. I think that's where his immaturity drove his behavior. But the novel is very atmospheric and beautifully written. This was my second reading, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.Product details

The best novel in the English language ever written!
Much too wordy, and much of the time I could not determine what was going on, too disjointed.
Positively universal story about the extent that guilt can drive a man-
