The rusty bicycle on the book cover had accompanied a rural Chinese family for 47 years. Helen Wang was born in a remote and poor village in northern China. She grew up with this bicycle. Her Dad rode this bicycle, and she was sitting at the front and back many times. As the bicycle aged, Helen’s dreams evolved from simply dreaming of candies, fruits, and a shining bicycle, to something bigger. In 1981, she went to a college in Beijing, and that opened her eyes. In 1996, she came to U.S. to pursue her dreams. This bicycle carried her parents’ love, family legacy, and the Chinese history of the last five decades. This is her story, in her words. A Chinese American looked back at the journey of her family in a fresh and unique way.

I had the privilege of working with Helen in Ohio from 2001-2004. She was a competent engineer and a wonderful lady. She had a sense of wonder and a questing spirit about her that I took at face value at the time. We have kept in touch over the years and I was excited to hear that she had self-published on Amazon. This book is short but fills in the gaps for me about a Helen I did not know at the time. It is a delightful tale of growing up poor but happy in a culture far different from ours in America. Using her Dad's bicycle as a thread to sew together the fabric of her life, we see that even though we were world's apart in culture and environment, we weren't so different as human beings. We have mutual desires for success, comfort, hope for our friends and family and a drive within us that keeps us going. The story is happy, upbeat, illuminating, and, like me, I am sure you will be sad to come to the last paragraph. There are some stumbles over language and constructs that you would expect from a person who grew up with a different language, but, they too, add to the charm of this book, especially having been written by an engineer (a group notorious for living among numbers rather than words). We could all be so lucky to live such a wonderful life, glued together by the love for a dad's bicycle!Product details
