APRIL FOOL PHYLLIS! edition by Susanna Leonard Hill jeffrey Ebbeler Children eBooks
Picture book author Susanna Leonard Hill does it again! April Fool, Phyllis is a fun read for kids as well as adults, and that's no April Fool's Day joke!Phyllis, our Mighty Girl heroine, is thoughtful and smart. And the cast of characters give kids a lovely interplay between family members.
As a former early childhood educator, I especially loved the reader engagement that is encouraged...as the treasure hunt develops, children will be guessing as to what the treasure might be.
The illustrations are lovely also...the warm colors used are inviting and give us a cozy feeling...which contrasts with the scenes during the blizzard.
When my own children were growing up, we lived on a piece of property that had three huge maple trees...and several times over the years, we tapped them. I absolutely loved the surprise in the treasure chest...and I remember well how many pots of boiling sap went from syrup to maple candy in the blink of an eye.
I highly recommend April Fool, Phyllis! It's a wonderful story of ingenuity and family.

APRIL FOOL PHYLLIS! edition by Susanna Leonard Hill jeffrey Ebbeler Children eBooks Reviews
Phyllis is a groundhog who knows about the weather. April 1st was the day of the spring treasure hunt but when Phyllis smelled the air she knew something wasn't right. A blizzard was coming. She declared to the family that the treasure hunt should be cancelled on the count of snow, but the family doesn't believe her, thinking that the winter season is over. But the more Phyllis persists that she is right, the more her family members begin to play April Fool pranks on her. Phyllis doesn't think the situation is very funny and keeps trying to plead her case, but the family doesn't budge, so--the treasure hunt is on.
Phyllis and the other children follow clues around Punxsutawney to find the treasure. But the farther they go away from their warm home, the more they start to notice changes in the weather. The wind picks up and it becomes colder. Will Phyllis and her family be able to make it back to their home before a blizzard rises up jeopardizing their fun?
Fans of Susanna's books will delight in her new one. She brings Phyllis's world to life, thrusting the reader into the adventure, having them wonder what will happen next. The illustrations by Jeffrey Ebbeler are so vivid and detailed that readers of all ages will relish in their realistic feel and mood. The author creates a fun, mystery type story that has several meanings running together. Readers will especially enjoy the information in the back of the book which informs the reader of the history of April Fool's Day.
This is a fun twist on April Fool's Day by bringing in Punxsutawney Phyllis as the main character. The Groundhog, as everyone knows, is the world's best forecaster for the end of winter. This is a friendship and family story as well as a fun mystery the reader can try to guess at solving too. The author included facts about April Fool's Day that I found interesting and had never known before. Excellent way to tie the real world to fiction. I first checked out this book, then had to buy my own copy because it's so much fun to read and enjoy the gorgeous illustrations.
This is a great book to read to kids before April Fool's Day. This book combines a treasure hunt with April Fool's Day pranks. That combination is apparently magical, because my daughter requests that I read this one all the time! She loves trying to guess the clues, and now she is always coming up with her own treasure hunts, with her own tricky, puzzle-like clues. (AKA, she's hiding our stuff and making us go through a "treasure hunt" to find it.) And then, of course, what kid doesn't like planning out what sort of April Fool's prank they are going to play. A big hit in our house!
I had the wonderful opportunity to have a April Fool, Phyllis stop by at my Vermont home for a couple days while she (her book) was on tour. I found Phyllis to be very well written, charming and funny. April Fool, Phyllis is a must have and a welcomed addition to my bookshelf.
Cousin Phyllis loved this book for her April Fool’s Day birthday.
Honestly, there aren't that many April Fools Day books on the market, and with small children at home, I like to celebrate each new holiday and season with a themed book.
Beyond its theme, there are several elements to recommend this book. First, its discussion of weather and natural cycles can inspire lessons about how to predict weather, signs of spring and winter and the like. Second, children actually participate in the Spring Treasure Hunt along with Phyllis and her cousins. My three and five-year-old love puzzles and mysteries, and they enjoyed shouting out their guesses to each new clue. Finally, Hill includes a historical note in the back of the book detailing the origins of April Fools Day. As with the best children's books, I learned something new. I had no idea that April 1st originally was considered New Year's Day under the Julian calendar. When the Gregorian calendar took root beginning in 1582, New Year's Day became January 1st. Those who continued to celebrate April 1st as the first day of the new year were considered the original fools.
For teachers, homeschoolers and interested parents, 'Hill includes classroom guides for kindergarten, first and second grade on her Web site. These guides align with many state standards for several subjects. Just for fun, Hill also has a Phyllis paper doll dress up page and a maze worksheet.
This fun, engaging book is a fun way to learn about April Fools Day, spring and weather.
