On a shimmering, Massachusetts morning, Martha Brailsford stepped aboard the "Counterpoint" and went for the last sail of her life. She had no way of knowing that the boat's owner, Tom Maimoni, had a dark side, that he'd lured other women onto his boat. What happened that morning of July 12, 1998? Was Martha's death an accident? Or, was she murdered? Would there be enough evidence for a jury to convict Maimoni? In this nonfiction debut, mystery novelist Margaret Press takes us into the heart of Salem, introducing a cast of real-life characters—the other women who encountered Maimoni, the team of dedicated investigators, the "lobsterman," and the modern-day witch of Salem. As the lives of these townspeople intertwine, readers are drawn in to an intriguing maze of surprise and contradiciton, where all the paths lead back to that fateful July morning aboard the "Counterpoint."

In spite of many many typos in this book - they don't distract from a very well written page turner. The essence of Salem is captured so well in this story. This tragedy made a medium size town (city) into a small town driven for justice. So many lifes were intertwined and it seems everyone put effort into bringing justice to this horror. My only disappointment was the punishment did not fit the crime. The descriptions of places and the character of people was so well written I felt I was right there in Salem. I could envision everything. And to put words on a page to describe Tom was brilliant. Fortunately he is a unique individual and we don't have encounter a similar monster often. I had a hard time putting this book done. Well done...Product details

Counterpoint A Murder in Massachusetts Bay eBook Margaret Press Joan Noble Pinkham Reviews
I love mysteries and true crime stories, however I was disappointed with this one. The facts surrounding the case are interesting, but I found myself struggling to finish it...not the page turner I had hoped for.
Long time readers of true crime know that it is necessary to wade through many mediocre, or worse, books to occasionally find a gem. "Counterpoint" is my most recent gem. It is the story of a murder committed by an incompetent sociopathic liar. The book contains all the elements which make true crime writing great a fascinating story; professional writing; an in depth study of the personalities and backgrounds of the subjects; and thorough research. I think any true crime aficionado will be happy they read this book.
I'd also like to briefly address the "review" by "a reader" titled "Bob, stay in New Hampshire." This is in no way a book review. While obviously written by someone with a personal axe to grind, it says nothing about the book. Apparently "a reader" feels that because Ms. Press lives only "on the border" of the neighborhood, she is somehow not as able to tell this story as she would have been had she lived in its center. Grow up. These are supposed to be book reviews, not juvenile whining.
good story but loads of spelling errors or printing errors or something- made it very difficult to read
I purchased the book "Counterpoint" with an autograph by the author. I did not realize the autograph was a dedicated autograph. My error. The book was in the condition as advertised.
I enjoyed reading the story but the version contained many typos and incorrect words, it was very distracting and annoying after awhile. I suspect autocorrect might have been a problem here. Anyway, the version definitely could benefit from editing.
Mystery writer Margaret Press has done an incredible job relating the events of this true crime story. Her totally unbiased portrayal is infused with empathy and subtlety as she describes the characters involved and the action taken in this most tragic death. When the jury is out, the reader too must step back and determine guilt. By looking at all the facts objectively, Press has opened the door to understanding and brought closure to the shocked community in which she lives and in which this crime took place.
Living in the Salem area and remembering this crime I found this book hard to put down. I found parts of the court proceedings a little boring but other than that it was interesting. Very sad that this evil man got away with murdering such a lovely woman.
